Nearly 1,300 feral cat lives have been saved over the past three months in northeast Florida, thanks to an innovative public/private collaboration backed by Best Friends, the city of Jacksonville, First Coast No More Homeless Pets and the Jacksonville Humane Society. Under the program, called Feral Freedom, all cats taken in by the citys animal control bypass the shelter system and are brought directly to First Coast NMHP, where they receive the full spa treatment sterilization, vaccinations, microchip, flea treatment and an ear tip. After a night of recovery, they are released back in the neighborhoods where they were captured. This is an entirely new scenario for animal control, one that not only saves lives but frees up shelter space for adoptable animals. It is no wonder the program has been embraced by the city. Whether it is through innovative programs like Feral Freedom or other efforts to bolster adoptions through strategic partnerships such as the one with the Jacksonville Humane Society, we are always looking for ways to increase the number of live releases of animals from our shelter, said Ebenezer Gujjarlapudi, director of Jacksonvilles Environmental and Compliance Department. I believe this new program is another step in the right direction toward accomplishing that goal. Oscar is a feral cat that had roamed my neighborhood, for many years, never being trapped. We would often see him after numerous fights, with multiple injuries. He would have nothing to do with can food or being trapped. We thought he was a mean tom always picking cat fights with the other tom cats in the neighborhood. Then one day he was tired of running and getting beat up, and started to stay in the shelter I built on the side of my house for all the ferals I TNR. When I found him sleeping in my shelter, he would often run from me if I approached him. I posted his pictures on a web board and received many suggestions, and lots of support to get him trapped.I had recently lost a very special feral kitten, and my heart was broken. I didn't think I could continue with all the rescue I do with the feral cats and experiencing the hurt and pain of losing the ones I could not save. This boy, I named Oscar, changed that, and helped me realize my work is not done, and all the trapping, TNR, rehabilitating feral and stray cats is well worth it. Oscar has many scars, at one time a broken leg. His tongue is sliced, two broken teeth, deformed back toenails, thick callouses on his pads,and part of one eyelid is missing. This was me in shadow labs a couple weeks after the expansion came out, before the big bearform dps nurf. I guess I jinxed it, cuz that patch came out less than a week after I made this lol. In any case, I've tried dpsing in bearform several times (mostly in non-progression raids) to see if I can keep up with other pure dps specs. While I never top the meter while doing so, I can maintain an impressively high amount of damage. If only druids could get windfury, bear dps would be somewhat viable.
